The first half of the decade is laden with World War II material. This includes correspondence with family, friends and employees serving in the military and information on the civilian effort at home. Greenfield's patriotism is evident and he was proud of all those who served. After the War, he was a sponsor of the committee for the development of the Chapel of Four Chaplains at Temple University, a memorial to four men of different faiths who sacrificed their own lives to save others. During this period Greenfield became involved with the National Conference of Christians and Jews, Inc., the Community Chest and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He also became more involved with area educational institutions, continuing as a trustee of the National Farm School and Temple University, but now became active at the University of Pennsylvania. His other activities included an appointment to the National Shrines Park Commission by President Truman in 1946 and chair of the Citizens' Reception Committee of the American Legion Convention. Greenfield's business acquisitions continued to grow during the 1940's. His City Stores Company purchased additional department and specialty stores, Bankers Securities purchased the Loft Candy Corporation of New York and the Hoving Corporation, and he continued to purchase Philadelphia hotels, such as the Bellevue Stratford. Greenfield's counsel was also sought by other businesses, including the Transit Investment Company and Penn Fruit Company. He was also essential in the reorganization of the bankrupt Philadelphia Rapid Transit Company and remained on the board of its successor, the Philadelphia Transportation Company. One of Greenfield's biggest achievements of the decade was capturing the 1948 Demcratic and Republican National Conventions for Philadelphia. Greenfield was head of the All Philadelphia Citizens Committee which put. together the bids. His files reflect the tremendous amount of time and effort he exerted to ensure the acceptance of Philadelphia's bid. His files contain clippings, correspondence, press releases and articles regarding both conventions. There is much more material, including a delegate's kit, tickets, programs, etc. from the Democratic National Convention, since Greenfield served as a delegate at large. The 1940's were not without its sorrow. In 1949, Greenfield lost his wife after a long illness. The amount of condolences received was overwhelming but in true Greenfield fashion, he acknowledged each one.
